Applied Paramedic Knowledge
All employers are required to have a number of qualified First Aiders on site in proportion to the number of staff.
The Three Day Course is necessary for this requirement of the Health & Safety Regulations 1981; it is also a good comprehensive introduction to First Aid for anyone.
The contents include:
Priorities of First Aid
Duties of a First Aider
Actions in Emergencies
Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
The unconscious casualty/recovery position
Treatment for wounds and bleeding / Cross infection
Dressings and bandages/ Minor injuries / Sprains and strains
Fractures/ Chest injuries / Spinal injuries / Eye injuries
Burns and Scalds
Shock / Diabetes / Choking
Poisoning
Heart Attack /Anaphylaxis / Stroke / Epilepsy /Asthma
Record Keeping
First Aid Equipment
The course ends with an assessment of skills and knowledge, and a certificate of competence is issued valid for three years. It can, 3 months before expiry or up to 28 days after expiry, be renewed by completing the 2 Day refresher First Aid at Work Course.
HSE new regulations recommend annual refresher training of a three hour course.
